Gun Battles Erupt in Mexico After
Son of 'El Chapo' Is Captured The rampage took place in parts of the
Sinaloa city of Culiacán. Sinaloa is the base of the Sinaloa drug
cartel, run by 'El Chapo' Guzmán prior
to his imprisonment in the U.S. The gunfire reportedly began when
a National Guard patrol was fired
upon by armed gunmen. Security forces attempted
to arrest Ovidio Guzmán López, son
of the notorious drug lord, but they
were met with heavy gunfire. The gunmen apparently went on a
rampage, setting vehicles and gas stations
on fire. Residents scrambled to take cover. Wanted in the U.S. on charges of drug-trafficking,
López — known as "El Ratón" — was released by
police due to the scale of violence. Alfonso Durazo, Mexico's security secretary, via NPR News Mexican officials say that
there were injuries, but no official
count has been made known to the public.
