Buffalo 'beauty queens' take over pageant in south Thailand
  • 5 years ago
Water buffaloes are dressed up to compete for the Miss Beautiful Buffalo title in Chonburi, eastern Thailand.

The event was held on October 12, with prizes awarded for the prettiest beasts, generally of farming equipment.

The team wearing masks are depicting the Ghost festival from Loei province in the northeast of Thailand.

The buffalo fair is held every October towards the end of the rainy season, with this being the 148th such pageant.

Agricultural mechanisation has largely replaced buffaloes, prompting the ladies accompanying their buffaloes to carry signs indicating their history.
