Antidepressants Are Tied to
Gestational Diabetes in New Study.
The study, conducted by researchers at
the University of Montreal, looked at data
from 237,172 pregnancies. It was published
in the journal 'BMJ Open.'.
According to the study, the antidepressants
amitriptyline and venlafaxine posed
the largest increased risk of
diabetes during pregnancy. .
For the mother, gestational diabetes
increases the possibility of high
blood pressure and the necessity for a cesarian section.
For the baby, gestational
diabetes can increase the
likelihood of type 2 diabetes later in
lifeand lower blood sugar in utero.
Study authors caution
that depression "needs to be
treated during pregnancy.".
If a woman is pregnant and is taking antidepressants, she should not stop by herself but should have an informed discussion with her treating physician to assess the best way forward, Anick Bérard, University of Montreal, via CNN.
More research is necessary to understand
why anti-depressants affect the possibility
of gestational diabetes
