Justice Department
May Begin Collecting
Migrant's DNA.
A new proposed Justice Department rule
would require border agents to collect a
cheek swab from those attempting to
enter the U.S. legally and illegally.
The DNA collected from migrants
attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico
border would be used against a
national criminal database.
The DNA database is overseen by
the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Civil rights groups say the proposed
move by the Trump administration
"raises serious privacy and civil
liberties concerns and lacks justification.".
The American Civil Liberties Union
points out the the Department of
Homeland Security (DHS) already uses
"less intrusive" methods like fingerprinting.
The DHS has already set up a
task force to consider the massive
logistics of collecting DNA
from hundreds of thousands of migrants.
ICE officials have already began collecting
migrant's DNA in an effort to prove whether
adults attempting to enter the U.S. with
children were actually related
