Federal Judge Halts Georgia's 'Heartbeat Bill'.
The controversial legislation
outlaws abortions when a woman
is around six weeks pregnant.
The bill was signed back in
May 2019 and then challenged
by Planned Parenthood
and the ACLU.
It would have then
become official on January 1.
In his ruling, Judge Steve C. Jones said
the bill breaches precedents from
two Supreme Court cases.
One of them is the landmark
Roe v. Wade decision from 1973.
This Court, as a district court, is bound by those decisions and, as stated above, is without discretion to overrule or otherwise change this abortion law precedent, Judge Steve C. Jones, via ruling.
A spokesperson for Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said they are analyzing the judge's ruling.
We are currently reviewing Judge Jones’ decision. Despite today’s outcome, we remain confident in our position, Spokeswoman Candice Broce, via 'Variety'.
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals would hear the case if Georgia
were to fight the decision
