A Japanese newspaper called on Tokyo to reconsider allowing the display of the Rising Sun flag at next year's Olympics.
The Tokyo Shimbun called the flag a symbol of the country's imperialistic ambition that is not only a reminder of its wartime atrocities, but also a source of great pain and regret for people throughout Asia.
In its editorial on Wednesday, the newspaper said, the global games aim to bring peace among participants, and as such, the host country should make it possible for participating countries to focus on the event without political or controversial distractions.
