Social media can be a great help for celebs who want to connect with fans and promote their upcoming projects. But too much of a good thing can quickly turn sour. Here are the real reasons a few of your favorite stars quit social media which surprisingly includes a list of celebs like Leslie Jones Armie Hammer Justin Bieber Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran.
Shortly after the 2017 London premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Kelly Marie Tran reflected on her role as engineer Rose Tico which had made her the first Asian actress to join the galaxy far far away. She told Variety:
"It's been both an honor and a responsibility. I feel so overwhelmed. I get very emotional when I see people who are able to identify with this character."
However by July 2018 Tran had deleted all the posts off her Instagram account after facing months of racist and sexist online harassment. In an op-ed in The New York Times that August Tran broke her silence on her decision to delete the app. She explained:
"It wasn't their words it's that I started to believe them. Their words seemed to confirm what growing up as a woman and a person of color already taught me: that I belonged in margins and spaces valid only as a minor character in their lives and stories."
She ended the piece on an empowering note saying:
"I am the first woman of color to have a leading role in a 'Star Wars' movie. I am the first Asian woman to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair. My real name is Loan. And I am just getting started."
