Pushing the EU's reset button: New Commission, new challenges
  • 5 years ago
As summer turns to autumn in Europe, new beginnings are afoot at the EU's institutions. Ursula von der Leyen, the incoming president of the European Commission, has unveiled her proposed team of new Commissioners. But the line-up wasn't without controversy, notably for including a vice-presidency portfolio entitled "Protecting our European Way of Life".
Those nominees will all be grilled in confirmation hearings by members of the European Parliament - which, after May’s election, is more politically splintered than ever.
Meanwhile, Finland has now taken on the rotating EU presidency until the end of the year - a big job for a small country of just 5.5 million people, with big dossiers like Brexit and climate change to take on.
In our debate, we ask what to expect as the EU turns a policy page and prepares to lose a member.
