Brexit chaos continues as parliament shuts down after Johnson fails to push through snap election

영국 하원, 조기총선 거부…브렉시트 혼전 심화

Over in the UK.
The odds are not in the favour of the British Prime Minister,... in his push to fulfil Brexit by October 31st with or without a deal.
On Monday,... Boris Johnson shut down parliament after facing another significant setback.
Oh Soo-young has the latest.
For the second time, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson failed to gather support from MPs to call for an early general election,... before he shut down parliament on Monday night.
"Why are they conniving to delay Brexit in defiance of the referendum. The only possible explanation is that they fear that we will win it Mr Speaker. That I would win it and secure a renewed mandate to take this country out the EU."
Lawmakers once again voted down a snap election,... as they see it as an attempt to circumvent a new legislation designed to prevent a no-deal Brexit.
It requires the UK to delay the departure date to January 31st next year,... unless MPs agree on an exit plan with or without a deal by October 19th.
Johnson,... however,... has refused to delay the departure date any further.
He said the government will use the five-week suspension of parliament to work on negotiations with Brussels while "preparing to leave without one."
The move triggered harsh criticism from Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who called it an attempt to silence the opposition.
"Government ministers have offered no explanation of the deal they are seeking, even if there is such a deal they're seeking, let alone any work out proposals presented to parliament for scrutiny. No wonder they're so keen to prorogue so early to avoid any scrutiny of what they're doing."
To scale up pressure on Downing Street,... MPs also voted, on Monday, to force the government to publish private messages and detailed plans on a no-deal scenario, and its move to suspend Parliament.
House of Commons speaker John Bercow also announced his resignation, showing anger over the prorogation.
After ten years in service,... Bercow said he'll stand down as speaker and MP at the next election or on 31 October, if there is no early election.
This means his successor would be selected by the current parliament which does not have a majority to back Johnson's Brexit plans.
Parliamentary sessions will resume on October 14th.
