Hong Kong's Chief Executive announced a formal withdrawal of the contentious extradition bill... that stirred up months of political unrest across the city.
"The government of special administrative region will officially withdraw the bill and eradicate the worries of people, the security chief will propose a motion to withdraw the bill after the legislative meeting is back."
Carrie Lam made the announcement on Wednesday,... after three months of pro-democracy rallies that saw spates of violence between protestors and police.
The controversial bill would have allowed China to arrest and extradite Hong Kong dissidents to the mainland.
After widespread protests,... the island state's leader initially announced the bill would be suspended,... saying it was "dead."
However, protesters continued to fight for a full withdrawal,... along with other demands to protect the rule of law and the "one-country, two-system" framework.
Lam said Wednesday that stopping the violence in the city is the top priority.
She added the government will sternly tackle violence and illegal action.
