Film tackles foreign workers dilemma in Canada

CANADA – Overseas Filipino workers' (OFW) group Migrante is pushing for greater awareness on the conditions temporary workers face in the country through the screening of the film "The End of Immigration". The film, a 50-minute documentary directed by Marie Boti and Malcolm Guy, unravels how Canada is increasingly relying on temporary worker or 'rent-a-workers' rather than immigrants. "We are really glad this film, 'The End of Immigration', is being shown in Red Deer because it's a place we had a wonderful experience. We met tremendous people advocating for the rights of the migrants," said Boti. The film tackles the foreign worker's dilemma and tickles the mind of the viewers. "The film actually looks into the conditions of temporary foreign workers, comparing migration noon at ngayon. Noon, permanent resident ka na agad pag pumunta ka rito. Ngayon, kailangan mo pa mag-apply. It looks deeper into why is this so," said Migrante spokesperson Marco Luciano. It also touches on the exploitation from recruitment agencies and the violation of basic worker's rights. While the organizers hope to educate thru the film, it was also raising funds for OFW Jaysen Reyes who was shot in an armed robbery at a gas station last September. Reyes is also thankful for the community's support in bringing his mother there to care for him during his recovery.
