Japan sets sights on record US$50.3 billion defense budget

Japan's defense ministry has made a record high defense budget proposal for next year, as the Abe administration seeks to heighten Japan's defense capability to counter threats from North Korea and China.
According to local media, the ministry has requested a budget of 50.3 billion U.S. dollars for the next fiscal year, starting April 2020, raising its defense spending for the eighth straight year.
The proposed budget is a 1.2 percent increase from the 2019 fiscal year.
The ministry said the goal is to build an "integrated defense force" in line with its defense force maintenance plan for 2019-to-2023.
The budget plan includes purchases of U.S. weapons, including F-35B stealth fighter jets, stand off missiles and ballistic missile defenses.
