South Korea's new light water nuclear reactor has become the first foreign reactor to earn certification for use in the U.S.
Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company announced Tuesday that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has certified Korea's Advanced Power Reactor-1400 model.
With the design certificate, the nuclear reactor can be built and operated in the U.S.
The certification is expected to give Korea's nuclear power plants a competitive advantage, not just in the U.S., but also in other countries.
The APR-1400 has already been exported to the United Arab Emirates and has been in commercial operation in Korea.
