Fa’afafine: the widely accepted third gender in Samoa

Keyonce Lee Hang was born genetically male, but now she is living as a woman and named herself after American singer Beyoncé. Lee Hang is one of the thousands of Samoan fa’afafine, which means ‘in the manner of a woman’. Although fa’afafine have not been defined as a third gender by law, they are widely accepted in Polynesian culture. They believe fa’afafine is their own cultural identity.
