The Quint: Armed Men Led by SP’s Atique Ahmed Assault Varsity Staff

Staff members of the Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences were allegedly assaulted by a group of armed men led by controversial Samajwadi Party leader Atique Ahmed in Allahabad on Wednesday.

Varsity officials claim six staff members were roughed up, after 50 armed men forced their way into the campus. They even beat up the varsity’s PRO, purportedly in the presence of Ahmed.
Recently, the university had expelled one of its student, Saif Siddiqui and even registered an FIR against him. Police suspect that the miscreants launched an attack on varsity staff, allegedly at the behest of Siddiqui.
Atique Ahmed, who has several criminal cases pending against him, had fallen out of favour as he was pushed off the stage by UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at a rally. His return within the party circles-along with him being offered the Kanpur Cantonment assembly seat-has only heightened the perception of SP as a party of anti-socials.
