MANILA, Philippines – Former Wimbledon champion and third seed Maria Sharapova was knocked out of the tournament by Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito. The tall Russian lost to a tenacious opponent ranked 131st in the world, leaving the women’s draw in tatters after the earlier withdrawal of second seed Victoria Azarenka. Former world number one Sharapova needed treatment in the second set after slipping and doing the splits behind the baseline. Players are calling on Wimbledon organizers to examine the state of the courts after a growing list of players to withdraw from the grass court Grand Slam due to injury. Mornings @ ANC, June 27, 2013
