MANILA, Philippines – Jerzy Janowicz of Poland and Nicolas Almagro of Spain progressed to the second round of the Madrid Open. Janowicz was playing the higher-ranked Sam Querrery of the United States, but the 24th-ranked Pole was able to secure a break in each set against the 18th-ranked American to win in just 68 minutes. Janowicz will next face world No. 6 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, home favorite Almagro advanced against Tobias Kamke, when the German qualifier retired from their match with right hip pain. Eleventh-seed Almagro will face either Mikhail Youzhny of Russia or Italian Fabio Fognini in the second round. -- Mornings @ ANC, May 7, 2013
