The Trump administration said on Tuesday that it is delaying new tariffs on some good from China until December 15th... because of what it says are "health, safety, national security and other factors."
The products include mobile phones, computer monitors, laptops, video game consoles and certain footwear and clothing.
President Trump told reporters on Tuesday that the delay is part of his efforts to avoid hitting U.S. shoppers this Christmas.
Analysts say the decision also reflects U.S. attempts to calm the financial markets and to make room to negotiate, while considering the impact on the U.S. economy once the new tariffs take effect.
The surprise announcement, in fact, came right after China's Ministry of Commerce revealed the two countries had resumed their talks over the phone.
They reportedly agreed to talk again in two weeks.
