Lulu Wang said she wasn't sure if the New York-born, rapper-turned-actress Awkwafina would be the best person to play a version of her in a dramatic role, but after seeing her audition tape, the director knew she was the one. Wang said Awkwafina had "a quality of melancholy, of both light and dark" in her performance that made her perfect.
