US Officially Withdraws From
Cold War Era Nuclear Treaty.
The United States announced their formal withdrawal from
the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty on August 2.
The treaty with Russia, which had been in place since
the Cold War era, limited the development of ground-based
missiles that have a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers. .
According to Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo,
the USA’s withdrawal is due to Russia’s continued
refusal to comply with the treaty.
Russia is solely responsible for the treaty's
demise…Russia failed to return to full and
verified compliance through the destruction
of its noncompliant missile system, Mike Pompeo, via CNN.
Now, the only nuclear arms agreement between the
USA and Russia is the New START Treaty, which limits the
number of strategic nuclear missile launchers allowed.
The US is expected to test a new, non-nuclear
missile within the next few weeks.
The Pentagon revealed in March
that the missile could be ready for
deployment as early as 2020.
