The tragic 22-year-old was staying with grandmother Ethel Kennedy when paramedics were called just after 2.30pm (7.30pm BST) to reports of a suspected drug overdose.

Paramedics found her in cardiac arrest and rushed her to Cape Cod Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to local media.

Saoirse's family said their 'hearts were shattered' by her death and said her life was 'filled with hope, promise and love.'

Ethel, 91, who is Robert F Kennedy's widow, added: “The world is a little less beautiful today.”Authorities have issued a statement confirming a death at the property but did not disclose the identity of the victim or the cause of death.

Tara Miltimore of the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office said: "Early this afternoon Barnstable police responded to a residence on Marchant Avenue in Hyannis Port for a report of an unattended death.

“The matter remains under investigation by the Barnstable police as well as state police detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office.”

Kennedy Hill had written about her struggles with depression and mental illness for her student newspaper at Deerfield Academy , a private preparatory school in Massachusetts, in 2016.

In the heartbreaking letter she described her mental illness like "friends your mom made you hang out with, even though you didn’t want to?"

She wrote: "My depression took root in the beginning of my middle school years and will be with me for the rest of my life."Although I was mostly a happy child, I suffered bouts of deep sadness that felt like a heavy boulder on my chest. These bouts would come and go, but they did not outwardly affect me until I was a new sophomore at Deerfield."

She said it briefly went away the following summer but came back before her junior year.

She wrote: "My sense of well-being was already compromised, and I totally lost it after someone I knew and loved broke serious sexual boundaries with me.

"I did the worst thing a victim can do, and I pretended it hadn’t happened.

"This all became too much, and I attempted to take my own life."She went for help she says at this point but struggled when she returned to school again as she found people did not know how to deal with mental illness properly.

In a full statement, her family said: "Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse.

"Her life was filled with hope, promise and love.
