Beijing says PLA garrison is major stabilising force in Hong Kong amid ongoing extradition law unrest

China’s central government has described the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) presence in Hong Kong as a major stabilising force in the city, backing up comments from the head of the local garrison.  On August 1, 2019, Beijing voiced its support for garrison commander Chen Daoxiang, one day after he warned that extreme violent incidents in the city should not be tolerated and are to be strongly condemned.
