Kamala Harris Reveals Bill to Nationally Decriminalize Marijuana The 2020 presidential candidate is working on the measure with Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler, the House Judiciary Chairman. The California senator and Nadler have called their legislation the "Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act." Times have changed -- marijuana should not be a crime. We need to start regulating marijuana, and expunge marijuana convictions from the records of millions of Americans so they can get on with their lives, Kamala Harris, via statement. Under the bill, pot would be taken off the list of drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. Similar to laws for alcohol, U.S. states would then each set up their own rules on how to handle marijuana. In addition, the bill takes half of the tax revenue generated from the pot industry each year to
help reinvest in improving communities. It also prevents discrimination for
things like federal housing against those who use marijuana. The bill is a departure from Harris's previous views on pot while she was California's Attorney General until 2017. As marijuana becomes legal across the country, we must make sure everyone has a real opportunity to participate in this growing industry, Kamala Harris, via statement.
