Animal Shelter Encourages Area 51 Raiders to ‘Storm Our Shelters’ An animal shelter in Oklahoma is taking the internet’s latest joke, storming Area 51, and turning it into an opportunity to adopt. In a post on Facebook, the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter urged people to “storm [their] shelter,” saying adoption isn’t “that far out of this world.” Staff members at the shelter even made tinfoil hats for some of their animals, saying they were ready to “protect you from the Area 51 aliens.” Their post quickly went viral, with over 7,000 likes and and 11,000 shares. The Area 51 jokes initially began on June 27, when the someone made a Facebook event to “storm Area 51.” The satirical event has garnered over 1.8 million attendees so far and inspired a number of memes and similar events to be created.
