HIV Prevention Pill Use
Has Risen 500% The use of the HIV prevention pill, known as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, increased 500%
from 2014 to 2017. The CDC reports that the medication is 90% effective. Over one-third of people at risk of contracting HIV are now protected. But use has remained low in populations of black and Hispanic/Latino men who have sex with men. According to the researchers, there are "structural barriers associated with race that influence access to high-quality care." PrEP costs up to $1,800 a month for the uninsured. Condom use is recommended alongside PrEP use.
