Meet the man feeding the needy in Hong Kong's poorest district: Spirit of Hong Kong
  • 5 years ago
Hong Kong is one of the world’s wealthiest cities, but poverty still remains a huge issue. In the city’s Sham Shui Po district, one in four people live below the official poverty line. Restaurant owner Chan Cheuk-ming, known to all as “Brother Ming,” decided he wanted to help battle poverty and hunger.

His low-cost restaurants serve up meals that most people in the neighborhood can afford. And he uses income from his restaurant – and donations – to give away free meals to the homeless. Now he and a team of volunteers hand out more than a thousand meals a week to the district’s most needy.

The video is part of a series highlighting the finalists of the 2018 Spirit of Hong Kong Awards, which is organized by the South China Morning Post. The awards have been shining a light on Hong Kong's unsung heroes since 2013.
