Why did one million people protest in Hong Kong?

Hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong people took to the streets on Sunday to protest against a proposed law that could allow criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China.

A former British colony, Hong Kong was handed over to Chinese rule in 1997 under the promise that the city could enjoy civil liberties not available in the mainland.

But in recent years, Beijing’s growing influence over Hong Kong has triggered concerns about the city’s autonomy.

Many people are worried the extradition bill, if passed, will further threaten the city’s freedoms by exposing citizens to the Communist Party-controlled legal system in mainland China.

Organizers say Sunday’s rally was joined by more than one million people, or about one in every seven Hong Kong residents. Police estimated 240,000 people took part at the peak of the march.
