Human rights watchdog says daughters of independence activists should also receive state benefits

The nation's human rights watchdog ruled it unjust... to grant state benefits only to the eldest sons of independence activists.
Under the current law, only the eldest male descendents of independence activists can receive benefits... as persons of national merit.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea said the rules constitute gender discrimination... and that females should also be eligible.
Tuesday's decision follows a petition filed by a grand daughter of an independence activist,... asking the veterans ministry to recognize her as a beneficiary.
