Protesters stormed into Hong Kong's Legislative Council, after hours of besieging the building, smashing glass doors and removing metal barriers.  Once inside the building, the group sprayed graffiti in the chamber and defaced portraits of previous Legco presidents. The day of violence on July 1, 2019, came as the city marked the 22nd anniversary of its 1997 return to Chinese sovereignty.
