Clashes between anti-extradition bill protesters and Hong Kong police as July 1 handover ceremony begins with sober flag-raising
  • 5 years ago
A tense stand-off between anti-extradition bill protesters and police in riot gear led to several clashes early on July 1, 2019, as Hong Kong marked the former British colony’s 1997 return to Chinese sovereignty.  Dignitaries who were attending an annual flag-raising ceremony were moved inside and watched the event on a live television feed. Officials said the guests were moved inside because the outdoor venue was threatened by a forecast of severe weather.
