We could not do without heaters. When it is cold out, we need furnaces in our homes, and sometimes we need portable heaters to keep warm.
But home heating equipment can malfunction. And, when they do it can be tragic. One case we handled a number of years ago involved a family that died as result of carbon monoxide poisoning. A furnace repair man had replaced a furnace in their home, and he mistakenly piped the flue gas vent into the air ducts. The family had no chance.
Similar situations have occurred when the flue gas ductwork of gas hot water heaters have become dislodged and distributed exhaust gas distributed into the home.
I recently was speaking with someone who was going to use a portable camping heater that runs propane cartridges in their home when they lost power in a storm. The particular unit he was going to use had a carbon monoxide sensor on it to automatically shut the heater off if the oxygen level got too low in the room. This is new and welcome technology.
