AFCON: Why Harambee Stars was massacred by Algeria

Harambee star 2-0 loss to Algeria ( Fennecs) in their opening Group C match of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was a very big disappointment to their fans.

Much was expected from the team after being accorded one of the best preparations in recent times.

The head coach Sebastian Migne confirmed that they were going to the game with no pressure but to perform.

Despite the expectations the, the team suffered a crashing defeat due to the following reasons: –

First and foremost during the first half, the efforts from the team were very feeble, that’s why through their poor coordination Algeria was awarded a penalty.

Secondly, the defenders were exposing the goalkeeper so much in that he was always under pressure.

The group also had some of its good players eliminated due to issues such as injuries further weakening their position.

Also, there was poor coordination between the strikers and the midfielders, the midfielders worked hard pushing chance forward but the finishing was poor.

Algeria had good players the likes of Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City) Adlene Guedioura (Nottingham) and Sofiane Feghouli (Galatasaray) who are more experienced than the Kenyan side who most of them play in the local Kenyan league.

In an effort to improve the national team Kenya should consider nurturing talents in an early stage by building soccer academies and funding them well.
