Floating in the Mangrover Delta under the afternoon sun, The Sundarban is the largest halophytic mangrove forest in the world, consisting of various types of trees and shrubs that grow in saline waters and sediment habitats
  • 5 years ago

The unique ecosystem of Sundarban is a faint balance between the freshwater courses of the tributaries and distributaries of Ganges-Brahmaputra riverine system and saline waters of the Bay of Bengal with massive quantities of decomposing leaves, twigs, and roots combine with organic matter from out-flowing rivers and in-coming tides to anchor a poushtik food web for terrestrial and aquatic and human beings.

The surroundings of the Sundarban mangroves—both in India and Bangladesh—are some of the most densely populated areas in the world. More than half of the population is underprivileged on the Indian side and depend heavily on the goods and services that the forests provide.

Mangrove trees are used for medicine, timber and construction material (e.g. for houses, boats, traps) as well as for fuel and charcoal production.

Covering about 40,000 sq. km of active delta region of which 10,000 sq.km is Sundarban (forest) deltoid floodplains across Bangladesh and India, the Sundarban Region is perhaps the largest unbroken mass of mangrove ecology remaining in the world.
