The UN report projects the world's population to hit 9-point-7 billion in 2050, and peak by the end of the century at 10-point-9 billion.
One reason, it says is longer life expectancies, which is projected to rise from the current 72-point-6 years to around 77 years by 2050.
Half of the population growth between now and 2050 is expected to come from just nine countries, including India, Nigeria and Pakistan.
