History of U.S. Open
at Pebble Beach This week marks the sixth U.S. Open to be
hosted by Pebble Beach Golf Links. The course has hosted some of the most dramatic finishes and historic victories since 1972. 1972 U.S. Open Jack Nicklaus won the first U.S. Open at
Pebble Beach for his third U.S. Open victory. Nicklaus sealed the win with a birdie on the
par-3 17th hole, after his one-iron hit the pin. 1982 U.S. Open Tom Watson defeated Jack Nicklaus by
two strokes for his first and only U.S. Open. Watson made a chip-in birdie from roughly
15 feet on the par-3 17th hole to seal the win. 1992 U.S. Open Tom Kite, who was widely recognized as
the best player without a major,
won his first U.S. Open. 2000 U.S. Open Tiger Woods announced his presence
as the greatest golfer in the world. Woods won by a record 15 strokes over Ernie Els
and Miguel
Angel Jimenez. 2010 U.S. Open Graeme McDowell won his first major title
by one stroke over Gregory Havret. Ernie Els finished third, followed by
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
