Pompeo urges China to free political prisoners to mark Tiananmen
  • 5 years ago
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is calling on China to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre this week by releasing all prisoners jailed for fighting human right abuses.
In a statement released on Monday,... Pompeo said such a step would "begin to demonstrate the Communist Party's willingness to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms."
He also urged China to give a public account of what happened during the student-led pro-democracy protests.
The massacre happened in 1989 and Beijing has never released an official death toll, which human rights groups and witnesses estimate to have been several thousand people.
