A top security expert at the UN has warned that the risk of nuclear war is at its highest since World War II.
Renata Dwan, the head of the UN Institute for Disarmament Research, says the arms control landscape is changing, partly due to strategic competition between the U.S. and China.
She urged the UN Security Council to treat what she called the "urgent" issue more seriously.
Disarmament talks have been in limbo for the past two decades as major nuclear powers, such as the U.S. and China, have been opposed to a prohibition treaty.
