US' Long Island Sound Sees Its First Great White Shark The area stretches 110 miles and is nestled between Long Island, New York and the state of Connecticut. Until now, it has never seen a great white shark. According to Marine organization OCEARCH, the white is nearly 10 feet long. The shark, which OCEARCH says weighs over 530 pounds, has also been dubbed "Cabot." @GWSharkCabot is just off the shore near Greenwich. The shark, who is named after explorer John Cabot, has been spotted as far south as Florida. Last week, he was recorded around Delaware's coast. Just like the namesake, the great white is now venturing into territories not before visited by his kind.
