One of the old continents smallest countries is also a versatile travel destination with impressive natural landscapes as well as urban eloquence. Vienna's Hofburg and Schönbrunn Palaces are the grandest living legacies of the Habsburg dynasty and showcase the royal splendor which epitomised the Austrian Empire. The capital is also huge for its coffee houses, art galleries and classical musical heritage; being once the home and final resting place of both Beethoven and Mozart. Yet Mozart was born in Salzburg, and his humble birthplace is now a museum. The city is also renowned for the immaculately preserved Hohensalzburg castle/fortress and the Eisriesenwelt limestone ice cave; the largest complex of its kind in the world. Hallstatt is a beautiful small town at the foothills of the Austrian alps and contains an underground salt lake as well as a vast network of caves and caverns. Innsbruck as well as the whole Tyrol region is adored all year round for the natural landscapes superimposed wherever you look. Part of this most beautiful natural region is in fact supplemented by the artificial Schlegeis Lake.
