Things to do in Khao Lak, Thailand - Buddha Day

Most times it’s not difficult to know what to do in Khao Lak. Occasionally, the need to ponder the possibilities magically disappears as events seem to unfold entirely on their own. On this occasion the main street of Bang Niang, a village that is close to the Khao Lak centre, became the scene for a wonderful ritual that is played out in many parts of Thailand.

The overwhelming majority of Thai people are Buddhists (around 94%), and several days each year are designated as Buddha days. On these occasions, the country celebrates with many rituals as Buddhist monks walk through the cities and villages blessing people. However, not all the people, including foreigners and Thais themselves, are completely happy, as alcoholic beverages are not allowed to be sold or served in any of the Khao Lak bars or restaurants!

Nevertheless, Buddha days are sacred occasions. In this video, a float containing a Buddhist monk is drawn through the Bang Niang street by a van. A lady approaches and is sprinkled with sacred water by the monk. The month is October, and although this time of year is still part of the Khao Lak rainy season, only light clouds dotted the sky. Very auspicious indeed!
