A group of nine traditional Confucian academies in South Korea, called seowon in Korean, are one step closer to being added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
UNESCO's evaluation agency, the International Council on Monuments and Sites recommended on Tuesday that the sites be added to the list.
Seowon are private Confucian academies established during Korea's Joseon Dynasty to honor renowned scholars and educate young people.
The final decision will be made at the World Heritage Committee meeting in Azerbaijan at the end of June.
If listed, seowon will become Korea's 14th item on the World Heritage list.
