Boba chain 'Chatime' owes staff over $7 million Down Under

AUSTRALIA — A Taiwan-based bubble tea chain owes staff millions of dollars in underpaid earnings, according to an investigation by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.

The newspapers claim they owe workers over $10m Australian dollars (over $7 million USD). The newspapers allege that Chatime and its Australian franchise network, Infinite Plus aka Chatime Australia, have been underpaying staff for years. The scandal is said to stretch as far back as 2009 in some cases.

The Age reports most of the affected workers are students from Taiwan and China. Apparently, many don't take the matter up with the authorities because they don't want to be deported as their visas didn't allow for work.
