This baoli is locked by the CISF for safety reasons, as it is rumored to have large poisonous snakes in it. When you visit the baoli there are some prison like broken structure at one side of the steps.

The baoli stone said -
"This ancient step well consists of an octagonal shaft about 14m deep with an adjoining tank measuring 6.1mX6.1m. On the north and west there are flights of steps with arched apartments on either side.

INA officers Shah Nawaz Khan, P.K. Sehgal and G.S. Dillon were confined here in 1945-46 during the freedom movement."

"A 14th century baoli (stepwell) in Red Fort, which housed prisoners facing the historical INA trial, is being converted into a symbol of "national regeneration".

The dilapidated Tughlaq period stepwell, which is older than the 17th century Red Fort which houses it, was handed over to the Archaeological Survey of India by the Army a few months ago. Work is now on to remove encroachments and vegetation under which the baoli lay unnoticed for several decades.

The stepwell was being desilted to make it functional, when some of the chambers used as prisons by the British were unearthed. These open chambers used to be blocked with bricks, leaving just a small opening for the prisoners to breathe. Some chambers had been blocked with iron grills. Even a toilet had been constructed for prisoners inside the stepwell, an official said.

"Besides some prisoners of the INA trial, several others held by the British were also lodged here," Union culture minister Jagmohan said. He said research was on to find out more about the step well."
