Amazon to Launch Thousands of Satellites Into Orbit to Provide Global Internet Access Amazon plans to launch 3,236 satellites in order to give internet access around the world. Their focus is on “unserved and underserved communities around the world.” The United Nations estimates that as many as four billion people are underserved in terms of internet access. Kuiper Systems LLC made several sets of filings with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) last month. The ITU is responsible for the global coordination of satellite orbits. Amazon was quick to confirm that Kuiper Systems was one of their projects. Amazon spokesperson, via statement The satellites will reportedly provide data coverage from the latitudes 56 degrees north to 56 degrees south. Over 90% of the world’s population lives within that area of the earth.
