Home Secretary announces enhanced stop and search powers

Sajid Javid has announced greater stop and search powers for police officers. The enhanced powers, which come into effect on Sunday, make it simpler for police to use Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act which empowers officers to stop and search anyone in a designated area without needing reasonable grounds for suspicion if serious violence is anticipated. The Home Secretary described stop and search as a "vital tool in fighting serious violence" and said he wanted police officers to "feel more comfortable to use it so they can protect all communities".
