Belgium would be first to support viable solutions for inter-Korean peace efforts: Minister De Crem

벨기에 장관 "유엔안보리 비상임이사국으로서 남북관계 진전 위해 지지 할 것"

The King of Belgium and his entourage wrapped up their state visit to South Korea today.
Upon their visit, our Kan Hyeong-woo sat down with Belgium's Minister for Home Affairs and Security Pieter De Crem... to discuss a range of topics, including bilateral relations and inter-Korean affairs. Take a look.
Thank you for having time to do this interview with us. So let me just jump right into the questions.
"As you wrap up your state visit to South Korea, which reaffirmed the two nations' commitment for a strong friendship… how can the two countries work together for an even brighter future?"
"Well I'd say that we can prepare for the future when we take into account our common history. It's, of course, Belgium participation during the Korean War. And since that very time we have an extremely deep-going and profound relationship. And It was the mutual basis of our trade relation, which is a very strong one, which keeps on increasing."
"As one of the ten non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council,… how can Belgium play a constructive role in bringing peace to the Korean Peninsula?"
"Sometimes there are questions about embargos and so on. But I think that also the northern part on this Peninsula must show some signs of confidence. And love cannot come from one side. This being said, we are supportive of all the initiatives. I think that after the Hanoi summit, so far there wasn't a lot of success. We should be really supportive of all the means and all the paths that are being followed by your government. But we will be very supportive in the United Nations and within the Security Council to see if we have viable options for solutions, then Belgium would be partner number one to support it."
"Talks between Pyeongyang and Washington have stalled after the Hanoi summit ended without an agreement. As a mediator,… what should South Korea do to improve the situation?"
"I would like to refer to the European construction. European construction was built after the Second World War on the strong actions between two countries that were enemies. During ages they were enemies, France and Germany. And they succeeded by negotiations, first of all, to respect each other and then working in a political program which was also an economic union that gave so far peace, prosperity and security since more than 75 years. So that option is possible. Sometimes it takes time, but you also need to have mutual confidence."
Thanks for your time today Minister De Crem.
It was my pleasure. Thank you.
