Survey Says Social Media Has Made Young People More Depressed According to results
from a survey by the
American Psychological Association, cases of mental health disorders rose exponentially among kids and
young adults around 2011. American Psychological Association,
via NBC Over 200,000 kids under 18
participated in the survey Likewise, 400,000 adults
18 and over did as well. Survey responses from the kid group started in 2005 and ended in 2017. For the adults, the time period
was 2008 to 2017. Each year, participants completed a questionnaire about any depressive symptoms they
might have experienced. In the adult group, results show suicidal thoughts or other
outcomes jumped 47%. Among adolescents, symptoms related to depression increased 52%. Besides the APA's survey, other studies have shows too much social media is linked to depression, isolation and anxiety.
