at Highest in 30 Years In 2018, an estimated 6,227
pedestrians were killed in traffic. That’s a striking rise compared to 2008,
where a total of 4,109 pedestrians were killed. A report by the Governors Highway
Safety Association (GHSA) cites alcohol use,
speeding and unsafe infrastructure as the
biggest contributing factors. Jonathan Adkins, executive director of GHSA, noted that while

16% of all traffic deaths in 2018. Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia and Texas account for
half of the pedestrian deaths in the U.S., with Florida being the deadliest. Florida is making strides to improve pedestrian safety,
having invested $100 million into improving lighting
and overhauling its roadway design manual. They have also put a pedestrian
and bicycle safety plan into place,
hoping to improve pedestrian safety.
