Quadrophenia director Franc Roddam bought in writer Martin Stellman to rewrite the film's script. Stellman's writing, incorporating his own memories and experiences of the early sixties, improved the script by imparting a stronger sense of time and place, which he felt the original lacked. Stellman, surprisingly, remains amazed at the film's enduring popularity.
