Nation at 9: Has Bollywood turned justice into a form of loyalty test?

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has managed to secure a reprieve from the courts. After a delay of 13 years - the fabled wheels of justice moved quickly that he even managed bail from the high court in 48 hours. Meanwhile his fans celebrated in the streets of Mumbai and Bollywood marched in unison to thank whatever gods maybe for Salman's unconquerable brand value. 13 years delay and bail in 48 hours, remember these numbers because it is easy to miss them. 2.54 lakh is the number of under-trials languishing in India. For a brief time, Salman was a part of this statistic. So what is it that worked for Salman - was it his influence, his money or just plain good luck?

What is the lesson tonight? Is it only influence and resources that move the wheels of justice - in a country who's constitution guarantees all the fundamental right of equality before law? In a highly unequal society - isn't this the ultimate privilege - of securing quicker, daresay more favorable justice? Is the speed of justice in India proportional to the legal muscle affordable?
